How did you get started in commercial photography?
I really don't ever remember not taking photographs. I got a little Kodak Instamatic for my 6th birthday and the rest is history. I moved to Atlanta to go to art school and lucked into assisting some great photographers. I haven't assisted or waited a table for going on 16 years now so I guess it's working out.
Describe a production from last year you are really proud of.
One of the most challenging and yet rewarding shoots was for Delta Sky Magazine. We drove a truck loaded to the hilt with gear, sets and props for a cover shoot with Denzel Washington down to New Orleans. It was a lot of work in less than ideal circumstances and it turned out really great. I have a super team that helped me make that happen – could not have done it without them.
What are some of the big trends you see coming in the next 5-10 years in the production industry?
Definitely shooting and directing motion is a trend I'm currently experiencing. I think we are only going to see more of that. The lines between still and motion in advertising just keep getting more blurry.
What advice can you give to talent when they're on set?
I would encourage talent to do a little homework about the client and the photographer they are working with. Most importantly, take an interest in what you are doing and be on time.
Unrelated to work, what are you passionate about?
I'm pretty crazy about my dogs...they're my kids! I love to travel and nothing moves my spirit more than a beautiful secluded beach or the view from a mountain top.
